Rushing Water

How many times have I had this dream,
That wakes me from my slumber?
How will I ever get to sleep again,
Counting sheep in a Book of Numbers?

How many times have I had this dream,
With you walking towards me from the river?
And when will I ever get to rest again,
Wondering if I can deliver?

This is the sound of rushing water,
Flooding through my brain,
This is the sound of God’s own daughter,
Calling out your name.

This is the sound of atmospheres,
Three metric tonnes of pressure,
This is the sum of all my fears,
Something I just can’t measure.

I remember the story of Jonah,
He was trapped in the belly of a whale.
How many times must he succeed?
How many times must he fail?

This is the sound of rushing water,
Flooding through my brain,
This is the sound of God’s own daughter,
Calling out your name.

I’ll see my shrink on an analyst’s couch,
Hit me with a hammer and I’ll say ‘ouch.’
What we have here is so easy to solve,
Just takes a firm purpose and some resolve.

This is the sound of rushing water,
Flooding through my brain,
This is the sound of God’s own daughter,
Calling out your name.

This is the sound of rushing water,
Flooding through my brain,
This is the sound of God’s own daughter,
Calling out your name…

Ease into the water
Flooding through your brain
Ease into the water
Calling out your name
Ease into the water
Flooding through your brain
Ease into the water

Sound of God’s own daughter

“In religion, people, let’s talk about God’s son, Jesus. But I talk about God’s daughter because I think the female entity is for me, more powerful, you know, accepting as a man that half of you is female, that you are made by your mother.”

Trapped in the belly of a whale

Although Sting was trapped at home while writing The Bridge, he was able to record the album remotely alongside other musicians: “The way it was recorded had to be done remotely. My guitar player was in Paris, the drummer was in L.A, and I was in Italy.”

“The sensitive part of us, the part that can compromise, that can flow, is the female part of every man, no matter how macho you are.”

Odds are slender

“The worst love songs are I love you, and you love me. It’s a circle, you can’t get in… Where as I love you, but you love someone else, for a writer that’s an interesting perspective. You can walk around the three dimensions.”

There is no cure

“He goes to see the doctor and the doctor says: “There is no cure, love is… you have to give up”. You have to say, okay, there is no solution, just accept it.”

Call the doctor

“I’m not the first song writer to write about love as being a sickness. You know, we have an expression in English being love sick. It’s like a “maladie” or it can cure you. And so this song is full of those clichés. It’s interesting that it was written during the time of the pandemic, you know when we are all afraid of being infected – so I use that metaphor of love being a sickness.”
